2020 J1 league Reviews

The 2020 J1 league, also known as the Meiji Yasuda J1 league due to its sponsors, is the top Japanese professional football league. The J1 league was established in the Nineties and has had its share of history but we will be concentrating on J1 league 2020.

J1 league 2020 has seen its side of actions and amazing football news. A total of 18 clubs are playing against themselves in the normal home and away format. After 32 games played near the end of the season, Yokohama.F.Marinos is at the top of the table with 64 points one point above FC Tokyo in second place. Meanwhile, Kashima Antlers is in 3rd place with 60 points and the defending champions Kawasaki Frontale trail behind in 4th place with 57 points.

The clubs that recently ascended to the J1 league 2020, Oita Trinita and Matsumoto Yamaga, have performed in very different ways. It is no news that these two clubs were able to stay one season the last time they were promoted to the J1 league. Now, it seems like Matsumoto Yamaga history will repeat itself as they have underperformed and are in 17th place in the table. They have 30 points after 32 games and 2 points above the last on the table, Jubilo Iwata.

The other club promoted; the Oita Trinita has had an impressive season as they worked hard to stay in the J1 league this 2020. They are in 7th place with 47 points after 32 matches above Andres Iniesta’s Vissel Kobe and Torres Sagan Tosu.

J1 league 2020 foreign players

As of 2020, the J1 league lifted the restriction on the signing number of foreign players. Therefore, any club in the J1 league can sign as many as they want but can only register only 5 foreign players for a single match-day squad.

With so many Brazilians playing in the J1 league, one would call this a second home for Brazilians. In fact, you can see more Brazilians present in the J1 league than any other foreigners. The player with the most goals in the league is Marcos Junior a Brazilian with 15 goals playing for Yokohama F. Marinos. The second-highest scorer is also Brazilian, Diego Oliviera, playing for FC. Tokyo with 14 goals and the third on the list is another Brazilian, Douglas, playing for Shimizu S-Pulse with 13 goals.

Currently, the Spanish legend David Villa is the 5th highest goal scorer in the J1 league 2020 with 12 goals with the team Vissel Kobe. He announced his retirement as an active player at the end of the season at 37 years. In addition, former national teammate, Fernando Torres has retired from playing football for the J1 League club Sagan Tosu. Likewise, fellow countryman, Isaac Cuenca still plays from the wing for the same club.

The J1 League club, Vissel Kobe secured the services of great players like Andres Iniesta, Lukas Podolskii, Thomas Vermaelen, and David Villa. Yet, this did not improve their standings on the table as they are in the 10th position with 41 points after 32 games. Moreover, there’re rumors about they are in talks with Manchester City’s David Silva to secure his signature at the end of the season.
