Spanish La Liga Week 7

There are very few leagues out there that are as entertaining as La Liga. The competition is unpredictable, full of twists and turns and features some of the absolute best clubs and players out there. Week 7 of the La Liga was highly engaging, to say the least. Expectations were toppled, some favorites who were expected to win lost against all odds, and there were more than a couple of unexpected surprises. Let’s take a brief look at how the week played out overall.

Friday, September 27

On the 27th of September Villarreal managed to beat Real Betis 5 -1. Karl Toko Ekambi managed to find the net twice during the match. Two out of the five goals were scored during injury time, one by Samuel Chukwueze and the other by Gerard Moreno. On the other side, Emerson was the only player able to find the net, unfortunately.

Saturday, September 28

Saturday started off with an exciting match with Valencia taking on Athletic Bilbao away from their home ground at San Mames stadium. Prior to the kick-off, most football pundits from all over the world predicted a home win and that Athletic Bilbao would come out on top. All expectations, however, were subverted when Valencia put on a really good fight, snatching an amazing home victory. They took the lead just before half time, all thanks to Denis Cheryshev, and fortunately were able to maintain it for the rest of the game.

Later, we saw Getafe take on Barcelona. The odds for Barcelona were slightly lower than normal due to the absence of Messi, but they were expected to come out on top regardless, and come out on too they did. By the end of the match, Barca ended up finding the net twice, while the home team remained goalless. Although Getafe put up a fight during the first half, they were no match for the Spanish giants. Luis Suárez and Junior Firpo quickly scoring in the second half snatched a well-deserved, as well as their first away win. This put them on the top of the table, ahead of Real Madrid.

Then, at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes, home team Granada took on Club Deportivo Leganes. Granada were the winners, with forward Antonio Puertas quickly scoring one goal in the first half. While Granada was expected to win the match, it was a close one. Leganes put up a very good resistance and weren’t willing to go down without a fight.

We also witnessed the first Madrid derby of this La Liga season between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid at the former’s home stadium, Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. At the time, Real Madrid was at the top of the table and was looking to maintain their unbeaten start. While both teams put on a great effort, and there were several close calls throughout, the match ended with both teams failing to score at all. Real remained on top, while Atletico stayed third.
